Free Spirit?

I heard the term "free spirit" used the other day and it made me wonder, how should one interpret this term? Should it be considered a compliment or an insult? I ask this question because I looked up the definition of this term and dictionary.com describes it as follows:

1) a person with a highly individual or unique attitude, lifestyle, or imagination; nonconformist.
2) one who is not restrained, as by convention or obligation; a nonconformist.
3) someone acting freely or even irresponsibly

Now these definitions lead me to the conclusion that unless you want to be viewed as irresponsible, highly individual, not restrained and of course a nonconformist than this is an insulting term. If a person has a college degree, works in an office setting, has many hobbies and interests but has a specific career goal - does that make them a "free spirit"?

Follow-Up

I know the last thing I said what that I was going to speak my mind regarding the comment made about the election results, but I have decided not to. My problem with the remark is not the person but the delivery.

I actually like this person on a personal level. I was just bothered by the comment because I know that there are many people out there who feel the same, "disgusted" by the outcome of the election, but like the comment posted by a McCain supporter, lets rejoice the fact that we are living history and pray that even though your candidate may not have been chosen, pray that the candidate that was chosen will be the change we need!

So to all those out there who aren't believers...try!

The Darkness Comes

Yesterday I woke up feeling completely blessed. Blessed that I am alive, blessed that I am healthy, blessed that I am living history in the making! That blessed feeling stays with me but I regret that not all of my fellow Americans feel as blessed.

I came to work yesterday morning tired but glad to be that tired, because I stayed up all night watching "The Greatest Election of All Time". And at about midnight, I heard one of the most powerful speeches come from the mouth of a Black man that is to be our 44Th President! It was one of the most memorable nights of my life. Watching barriers being broken, watching history being made, and watching the country rejoice the dawn of a new era!

A era where a Black man is holding the most powerful position in America. An era where Americans of all ethnic backgrounds can come together and live peacefully and happily. An era where we as a Nation can say, "YES WE CAN" and actually do it! But like a picnic you plan at the beginning of the week, you can't predict the weather!

But not everyone felt the same as I did. They had a certain slump in their back, a thorn in their side, a limp in their walk. They obviously were not pleased with the outcome of the election. To my surprise one person decided that they were going to verbalize their frustrations. This person blurts out, "I was disgusted with the election last night!". "Whoa", I thought to myself, "did this person really just say that?" Then they proceed, "I told *** turn off the TV I just can watch this any more it's making me sick!"

Now what possessed this person to believe that anyone in the office was going to agree with them was beyond me. I wanted to scream out, "ARE YOU CRAZY?" But I didn't! I didn't even acknowledge the comment, as well as many of my other colleagues. But that stuck with me all day. I have a lot that I wanted to say to this person, but since I don't really have the time I need right now I am going to come back tonight and let you know exactly what I should have said!

In the meantime, I still feel blessed!

Presidential Election

Obviously the thing on the forefront of every one's mind today is the results of yesterday's Presidential Election. I must say, although I know there are many people out there that are not Obama supporters, we as a Nation had a huge victory last night. Not because Barack Obama won the Presidential Election but because we as a Nation proved that we will no longer judge someone "by the color of their skin but by the content of their character".

Barack Obama is hands down the more qualified candidate for this position, regardless of the color of his skin. YES, I am absolutely ecstatic to have lived in a time where I was able to see the Country's 1st Black President elected, but more so I am proud to know that this election America spoke up. This election the people went out and voted and this election the people's cries have been heard!

If you didn't stay up long enough to hear his speech...please, please, please I urge you YouTube it, google it or find it on CNN and watch it. That speech and that speech alone is all you need to see or hear to know that this year America made a fantastic decision. This year America chose a President that is compassionate, loyal, inspirational, but above all clearly serious about his presidency!

My husband and I were sitting in our living room watching CNN as many of our fellow Americans were, and it was there that we were able to see the sheer awesomeness that is our country. Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, all races joined in Chicago to wait for the announcement of our 44Th President of the United States, a Black Man! I was moved by the crowd, such a diverse group cheering and dancing...men, women, children of all races, all the happiest the Nation has been in a long time. We have ourselves to thank for that, we have finally achieved, even if for just last night, we have finally achieved Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream...and we are now living it!

I cannot wait to see what next year has in store for us as I am confident Barack Obama is going to be one of the best Presidents this country has ever elected!
